Launched at Newstead Festival in 2019, Kitchen Ballads highlights the songwriter and entertainer we have come to know and love and is the perfect companion to the timeless Heart Tattoo. The song "Vigil", his thoughtful tribute to Jill Meagher and Eurydice Dixon, shows yet again that he is among the best when it comes to issues based songwriting.

Enda Kenny – Heart Tattoo CD Review by Graham Blackley

Heart Tattoo is the seventh studio album by Melbourne-based singer, songwriter and guitarist Enda Kenny. Listening to this accomplished album, it doesn’t take long to understand why the Irish-born Kenny has won the Port Fairy Folk Festival songwriting award on two occasions as his lyrics envelop the listener into vividly drawn worlds that inspire both recognition and understanding. On opening track King St. he playfully yet astutely encapsulates the character of so much nocturnal street-life when he drawls, “There ain’t no kings on King Street/ in the hours before the dawn/No princes on that Princes Bridge/from midnight until morn.” On the tender Jodie, a song which has the sophisticated lilt of Leonard Cohen’s classic work, Kenny ably (and with gentle humour) conjures the significance of those everyday relationships that give our lives both richness and colour whilst making us feel part of the world in which we live: “You can walk in feelin’/Like you haven’t got a dime/ And leave like you’re a millionaire/All it takes is thirty minutes of her time/ And did I mention? She cuts hair.” The rich seams of melody that run through this album complement the evocative lyrics while the musicianship on display is of the highest order. Heart Tattoo is a sterling example of modern and sophisticated folk music at its best.

‘Melbourne in 60 Seconds’ is a collaborative effort, born in lockdown as a positive project during testing times, a bit of joy amid the frustration.

Firstly a challenge, a distraction and an opportunity to do what musicians do best – compose and perform music.

Secondly, as the doors opened once again and music slowly returned to the stages, the corners, the pubs and the footpaths, a reminder of what a great musical town Melbourne is.

You will find offerings reflecting on everything from the weather, the G, pubs and their clientele, Moomba, street lights, communication towers, lost love, lockdown, the lanes, the streets, the suburbs and the city.

The performers are as varied as the music – established acts, troubadours, careers spanning fifty plus years to the emerging and those yet to set foot on a stage.

There were only three rules; the work had to be original, relate in some way to Melbourne, with a maximum length of one minute (though some apparently believe a minute is 64 seconds which we’ll put down to inflation.

Music is part of the fabric of this city and both shapes and reflects our culture.

It sets Melbourne apart, it attracts, it employs and it celebrates.

This is a salute to the performers, the road crews, designers, the venues, the pubs, the record stores, all those involved directly or indirectly in getting the music out there – and of course the punters, without whose support there would be no music industry.

All profit from CD sales and downloads will be donated to Support Act.
